Derrick Delgado in Tick Tick Boom!

September 11, 2021 | By LUX Performing Arts

Congratulations to LUX student, Derrick Delgado, on his appearance in the film adaptation of the musical tick, tick… BOOM! directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. We caught up with Derrick to see how filming went, discuss his love for performing, and find out what’s up next for him!

Congratulations on your role in tick, tick… Boom! What was your reaction when you first found out you got the role?

Thank you. I was super excited and I couldn't wait to get started.

What was the audition process like?

I actually auditioned right before lockdown. It was my first audition after signing with Take 3 Talent. I had never sang and it needed me to sing. I tried to learn the song but I didn't think I did too well. I felt really bad and my mom signed me up for classes with LUX's Megan Postle. We started working in-person and then online. She taught me so much and made me confident about singing. Then this spring I got the same audition. This time I felt ready and sang the same song and booked it.

What was it like working with Lin-Manuel Miranda?

He was very nice and patient with us. He made us laugh and it made me feel more comfortable. I loved it.

What made you want to be a performer?

I always liked to perform. When I was younger I would make believe I was a YouTuber and act like I was filming videos. I would even ask "my audience" to like and subscribe.

You just made your stage musical debut in LUX’s production of Matilda! Congrats! What was that experience like?

It was scary at first but everyone was so awesome. I made so many friends and actually learned to dance a little. Erin was so nice and she is a great teacher. I am going to miss the whole cast and crew and being on stage.

Now that you've done this film, what are you excited to do next?

I hope I can work more and be on Broadway one day. I loved being on stage and hope I can do it again.

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for you, Derrick! Check him out in *tick, tick...Boom!*, arriving in select theatres November 12th and on Netflix November 19th!
